What is Important in Choosing an Assisted Living Residence For your Loved One, When You Want the Best?

1. Observe the environment:  Is it home-like in nature? What do you see?  What do you hear?  What is your overall feeling as you imagine your loved one residing there?  Are there a number of warm gathering areas and activity areas where your loved one can go to socialize?

At Huntington Place there are lounges throughout the residence.  The beauty-barber shop, library, craft room, spa area, and chapel invite residents to participate in scheduled activities and for pre-scheduled appointments.  The dining room is a favorite place not only to eat, but to socialize before and after a meal!

Caregivers at Huntington Place have chosen this profession because they love older adults.  Our residents and families compliment the caregivers’ friendly and caring approach on a regular basis.

2. Check out the Activity Program:  Is there a calendar with a variety of activities to choose from?  Are there activity staff and/or volunteers to carry out the activities and make sure all have an opportunity to attend that wish to do so?

At Huntington Place there are Activity staff, as well as volunteers to direct scheduled events and to make sure residents get the assistance they need in order to remember to attend or to get to the events.  There are 3-4  activities to choose from daily, including church services, exercise classes, bingo, going out to eat, attending a community performance, going to the senior center for lunch and entertainment, scrap booking, and musical entertainment on-site!

3. Ask about transportation:  If family or friends are not able to take your loved one to the doctor, can anything be arranged through the assisted living residence?  How far in advance does the transportation need to be scheduled to ensure a ride?

At Huntington Place we have buses and drivers that can take you wherever you need to go!  It is rare when we cannot arrange transportation due to both buses being busy when you need a ride.

4. Take note of where the assisted living residence is located in relation to friends and family who will be visiting:  Is the location convenient for friends and family to visit as they go about their busy lives, by stopping in before or after work, or during a lunch hour?  Is it near shopping and restaurants for spending time together away from the residence, that doesn’t take a lot of extra travel time?

Huntington Place could be on your way home!  Shopping and restaurants are just 5 minutes down the road.

5. Eat a meal in the dining room:  What is the general dining room atmosphere?  Are residents treated with dignity and respect as they are served their meal and receive necessary assistance?  Does the food look appetizing?  Are there choices?  Can the kitchen staff prepare meals following special doctor-ordered diets?

The dining room at Huntington Place is beautiful, complete with a gas fireplace and a warm décor.  Meal times are great for socializing!  Menus are developed using the Food Guide Pyramid, and we also ask for resident input on a monthly basis.  There is a choice of the entrée for all meals, and also a choice of desserts.  Menus are revised for those residents following doctor-ordered diets.

6. Look at the cleanliness, lighting and general maintenance of the residence:  Are the floors and furniture clean and in good repair?  Are resident apartments clean?  What is the general appearance of the residents?  Are there plenty of windows in common areas and resident apartments to allow sunlight into the residence?

At Huntington Place our housekeeping and engineering staff work hard every day to keep our residence clean, odor-free, and safe for our residents, their families and our staff.  We often receive comments about how bright and cheery the resident apartments are as the light streams in the windows.  Sunlight is so important to the mental health and attitude of people in general!

7. What services and amenities does the assisted living residence offer that would be enjoyable or of  benefit to your loved one?

At Huntington Place our residents have the opportunity to schedule appointments with our on-site beautician for hair and nail care.  Residents can also take advantage of church services with a variety of pastors, massages, on-site banking, shopping in our General Store, and foot care by an RN.

At Huntington Place we take care of our residents as we would our own parents or grandparents, treating them with dignity, respect, and letting them know we truly care.
