It is difficult at best to realize that you, your parent, grandparent, or another close relative or friend is in need of some type of residential assistance so that health and safety are not compromised.  Your goal of course is to maintain the highest quality of life and level of independence possible, for as long as possible.

At Huntington Place we have the experience and knowledge to assist you as you travel this often emotionally bumpy road.  The questions below will help you answer the most important question, “Is it time to start exploring residential options?”

  1. Is it becoming difficult to do laundry, so it’s easier to wear the same clothes for longer periods of time?

  2. Does unopened mail pile up on the table?

  3. When the mail is opened, are there past-due notices and bills for “special deals” from television and telephone solicitations?

  4. Is there a question about whether medications have been taken properly and as prescribed?

  5. Are there questions that can’t be answered about past and future medical appointments and doctor recommendations?

  6. Has the fresh, clean smell and look of the house been replaced by new odors and disorganization that could result in safety issues?

  7. Is the car often parked erratically, such as partially off the driveway or not all the way into the garage?  Have safety issues arisen from driving?

  8. Do you periodically see new scrapes and dents in the car?

  9. Are there difficulties remembering what is said in a conversation, and are there repeated statements and questions frequently?

  10. Has it become easier to stay home alone rather than venture out to socialize with friends in the community?

  11. Is it becoming more difficult to walk or get around the house?  Has the actual living space been reduced to just 1 or 2 rooms?    Do stairs have to be negotiated in order to access the bathroom or bedroom areas?

  12. Have there been some recent falls in the house?

  13. Has it been quite a while since the bathtub or shower has been used?

  14. Is the food in the refrigerator outdated and no longer fit to eat?  Is a good appetite demonstrated when out with friends and family, as opposed to not eating much when home alone?

Paying close attention to the above signs and signals will tell you when it is time to research the many residential options available.  If you take the time to travel this road before health or safety concerns actually become a liability, when the time is right to make a change, you will be able to make an informed and independent decision.  The result is priceless; harmony and peace of mind for you and your entire family.
